A welcome return to Uganda.
We absolutely love to roast speciality coffee from Uganda, not only because of the high quality of the raw material, but also the 'local connection' we have with the origin, working with Agri Evolve once again (more on this below!).
This time, we've picked out a natural process from the Kalingwe community in the Rwenzori Mountains, the culmination of the work of 107 small-scale farmers in the region, providing all hand-picked coffee cherries before transportation to the Nyabirongo Washing Station nearby, operated by Agri Evolve to process the cherries, either via washing or drying processes.
At Nyabirongo Washing Station; Kalingwe is processed by sun drying the cherries for roughly three weeks before hulling, grading, cleaning and bagging. We get very delicate notes of strawberry and peaches, rounded off by big bold caramel lingering undertones. We think this is perfect for filter brewing, but also for a more complex espresso.
Process: Natural
Location: Rwenzori Mountains National Park
Altitude: 1700 - 2000 MASL
Flavour Notes: Raspberry, Peaches and Caramel
Roast Level: Medium
Varietal: SL14 / SL28
Agri Evolve is a social enterprise managed in the UK by Jonny, Beth and Martin Rowland (Martin is located less than 10 miles away from our roastery!). The aim of the project is educate farmers and new generation farmers, managing a green sustainable social project. You can read more about the work done at Agri Evolve and ACE 2030 here.
For every kilogram of Kalingwe we buy, 40p is donated automatically to local communities in the Rwenzori Mountains for their community fund to help with living standards and essential purchases.
